Identification

Description: A very distinctive species with two color forms. The normal phase has a mostly black body with yellow stripes and a yellow underside and legs. There is also a pinkish/red phase with red replacing the black on the body. This reddish phase appears to be less common than the typical form. Nymphs of this species at present are unknown.

Distribution: A common, widespread species found through the Southeast and into the Neotropics to El Salvador and Costa Rica, with some recent reports from Arizona (per Bugguide).
Abundance: An uncommon species, recorded from all three regions of the state; probably more abundant in the right habitat.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Has been recorded in the state in grassy, brushy areas (including microstygium) and mixed hardwood forest edge.
