DistributionThere is one specimen for NC in the SERNEC database: Buncombe Co, Sandy Bottom Wetland Preserve, on marsh edge, 28 August 2014, Boyd 14-141 (WWC). However, the digital record lacks an image, and the specimen needs ID vetting. Weakley maps it in the montane provinces, and BONAP maps it in Buncombe County. However, because of the lack of confirmation by the editors, we prefer not to map Buncombe County on the map below.

The species ranges from southern Canada south to NY and MN, and down the Appalachians southward to western VA (one locale), northeastern TN, and possibly western NC.
AbundanceExtremely rare, if the specimen has been correctly identified. The NCNHP considers it as SU (Undetermined) and on its Watch List as (W3) -- not confirmed. The website editors prefer the State Rank of SR (Reported).
HabitatThis St. John's-wort is an obligate wetland species, growing in wet stream margins, wet meadows, swampy places, and other wetlands, typically in partly shaded sites. The habitat listed on the NC specimen label of "on marsh edge, partly shaded" is certainly suitable for the species.
PhenologyFlowers and fruits from May into August.
IdentificationThis is a medium-sized herbaceous member of this large genus, growing to 1-1.5 feet tall, with a mostly unbranched stem to the inflorescence. There are a few flowers at the summit, yellow, and with the spread flower about 1/2-inch across. The elliptical leaves tend to be somewhat ascending, as opposed to spreading.
