Distribution | A single collection is known from Carteret County: Croatan National Forest, October 1991, LeBlond 2564 (NCU). However, in December 2020, new data from a paper by Guy Nesom in Phytoneuron shows conclusively that the NC specimen is var. nudata. Thus, taxon australis is falsely reported in NC.
Northeastern FL to southern FL; disjunct to Carteret County, NC.
Abundance | No data. The NCNHP (2021) has this taxon incorrectly listed as a Watch List (W7) taxon and a State Rank of S1?. As stated above, this is based on an incorrect identification.

Phenology | Flowering and fruiting September-October.
Identification | Rayless-goldenrods have a unique aspect: a basal rosette of lance-shaped leaves, several small and slender stem leaves, and a flat-topped, yellow inflorescence of skinny heads, each with only a few disk florets and no rays. In this variety. In var. nudata, the basal leaf blades show a distinct taper or narrowing to the leaf stalks, whereas those of var. australis (reported erroneously in NC) are skinny throughout and show a very gradual narrowing from tip of blade to base of stalk.
