AuthorD. Don
DistributionIn NC, restricted to the Sandhills region.

Occurs only in the Sandhills region of NC and SC.
AbundanceFairly common.
HabitatWell-managed (recurring fire) Longleaf Pine uplands in xeric to dry soil.
PhenologySame as var. pedata. The 2 can sometimes be found together, occasionally hybridizing.
IdentificationInstead of leaves cut into the shape of a bird's foot, var. flabellata leaves are elliptical or obovate in outline, with the terminal margin cut into many teeth. Such leaves are striking, but the flowers look the same as the nominate variety.
Taxonomic CommentsThis is another example of a Sandhills endemic.

General note on Viola: In 2009-10 B.A. Sorrie (website map editor) went through the whole collection at NCU, annotating all specimens against those verified by experts in the genus. The range maps in RAB (1968) have been changed accordingly. More recently, H. Ballard and students are in the process of revising all Southeastern Viola, and they will recognize additional species; this work has now been published (see above). We will follow updated editions of Weakley in recognizing them.
