Distribution | Reported for the NC Mountains by Weakley (2022). There are 3 specimens at SERNEC, with the two montane ones originally determined as var. angustifolium, but possess very broad leaf blades typical of var. eamesii. Both specimens are vegetative only and need to be vetted. Clay County, Bly Gap, Nantahala NF, 23 June 2003, W. Rankin s.n. (WCUH). Swain County, Ace Enloe Ridge, rich old growth cove hardwoods, 15 May 1991, K Langdon 1275 (GSMNP). There is a specimen at NCU from Durham County, though geographically this seems better for the nominate variety; the website editors are not including this on the map below, for now.
This is a Mid-eastern variety, ranging southeast to KY and to NC according to Gleason (1952, New Britton & Brown Illustrated Flora).
Abundance | Very rare. The NCNHP has begun tracking this taxon, as Significantly Rare, in late 2022. Though their State Rank is SH, the Clay County specimen, if correct, is 2003, and thus the website editors feel that a rank of S1 or S1? is more appropriate.
Habitat | "Mesic forests, bluffs, outcrops, especially over calcareous or mafic rocks" (Weakley 2022).
Phenology | Blooms in April-May, and fruits in July-August.
Identification | This variety differs from the nominate one by having the "Lower leaf surface densely puberulent; leaves averaging 2× as long as wide" (Weakley 2022), whereas the nominate one has leaves averaging 4x as long as wide and the lower leaf surface is smooth or with some hairs along the main veins.
