DistributionPiedmont only, so far as is known. Only 2 collections are from escaped/established populations, both from campus of UNC Chapel Hill. One collected in the 1990s is from slopes of Morgan Creek (where originally planted in the 40s or 50s); the other collected in 2005 is from Battle Park.

Native of SW Asia.

Phenology
IdentificationSemi-woody shrub with leaflike cladophylls (modified stems) that are rather shiny on the surfaces, ovate, short-taper-pointed. Plants may resemble a small-leaved bamboo. Berries are round and red.
