DistributionWeakley (2022) considers this as a valid variety, limited to just the Coastal Plain. The website editors find no SERNEC specimens yet re-determined to this variety; thus, the range map cannot be populated at the present time.

"E. NC south to s. FL, west to e. TX" (Weakley 2022). This is a Southern taxon of the species.
AbundanceNot known. Though Weakley's map shows "rare" for the NC Coastal Plain, and "uncommon" for the nominate variety hispida, the editors simply prefer a suggested State Rank of SU (Undetermined) at the present time.
Habitat"Swamps, rich moist or dry forests and woodlands" (Weakley 2022).
PhenologyFlowers and fruits in April and May.
IdentificationThis variety is separated from the nominate one by having leaves with basal lobes, which can even be hastate in shape; the nominate form has leaves with no basal lobes and thus is a more typical ovate shape.
Taxonomic CommentsA recent entry into Weakley's floras, based on a study by J.B. Norton.
