Distribution | Weakley (2022) considers this as a valid variety, limited to just the Coastal Plain. The website editors find no SERNEC specimens yet re-determined to this variety; thus, the range map cannot be populated at the present time.
"E. NC south to s. FL, west to e. TX" (Weakley 2022). This is a Southern taxon of the species.
Abundance | Not known. Though Weakley's map shows "rare" for the NC Coastal Plain, and "uncommon" for the nominate variety hispida, the editors simply prefer a suggested State Rank of SU (Undetermined) at the present time.
Habitat | "Swamps, rich moist or dry forests and woodlands" (Weakley 2022).
Phenology | Flowers and fruits in April and May.
Identification | This variety is separated from the nominate one by having leaves with basal lobes, which can even be hastate in shape; the nominate form has leaves with no basal lobes and thus is a more typical ovate shape.
