Montane Rock Barrens
Habitat Overview Rock domes and cliffs that have small to extensive deposits of soil, sufficient to support mats of xerophytic mosses, graminoids, and other dwarf plant species. This habitat includes the most generalized of the montane outcrop specialists, including those found at both mid- to high-elevations (>4,000 ft) and on either felsic outcrops or on both felsic and mafic formations.

Species that are restricted to Amphibolite and other circumneutral to basic rock formations are treated in the Basic Montane Rock Barrens habitat, as are species restricted to high elevations. Species that are associated with vertical cliffs and shaded, more mesic or wet outcrops are also treated separately.
