Habitat Overview This habitat includes stands of bottomland forests composed of hardwoods, growing on the flat, poorly drained, alluvial soils typical of the Coastal Plain.

Determining Species include woody plants that are tolerant of the acidic soil and water conditions associated with blackwater rivers, although some of them can occur in both blackwater and brownwater systems.

Animal species includes herbivores that are specialized on the woody plants of this habitat or that are otherwise only known from these habitats in North Carolina.
