Identification
Field Guide Descriptions: Covell (2005); Beadle and Leckie (2012)Online Photographs: MPG, BugGuideTechnical Description, Adults: Forbes (1923)Technical Description, Immature Stages: Wagner (2005)
Adult Markings: Slightly variable in appearance with forewings of pale yellow to warm brown with gray or chestnut highlights. A curving or sinuous white line projects a short way inward from the tornus and a similar white line halfway along and perpendicular to the inner margin and are separated by a patch of blackish scales in the discal area. The buffy basal half of the inner margin broadens into a buffy patch that abuts the inner white line. Also typically shows a row of black spots just inward from the outer margin. Hindwing is described by Covell (2005) as pale grayish brown. Length from tip of head to apex of forewing at rest averages 10 mm (n = 4).
Adult ID Requirements: Identifiable from good quality photos of unworn specimens.
Immatures and Development: Slug-like caterpillar flattened above with red- to purple-brown dorsal markings bounded by lemon yellow and pale green sides. Lateral rows of short stinging spines, light green over the middle segments, becoming reddish anteriorly and posteriorly. The sting of the larvae is mild, the discomfort fading after just a few minutes (Wagner, 2005).
