Taxonomic Comments: Macrobiotus hufelandi was once thought to be cosmopolitan, but it is now known to be a very large group of difficult to identify species. Kaczmarek & Michalczyk 2017 provides valuable morphological guidance for this group.
Species Notes: Terrestrial. Macrobiotus hufelandi proper was first described in Germany, many early records need reexamination.

Species Description: The hufelandi group have two macroplacoids and a microplacoid. In Macrobiotus hufelandi proper the dorsal cuticle is smooth without gibbosities or granulations, oral cavity armature of hufelandi type with three separate dorsal teeth in the third band, egg shell reticulated. Definitive ID by L. Kaczmarek.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Most abundant in soil, but also found in all other terrestrial habitats.
Abundance: Abundant in Nelson's Roan Mt. inventory. Uncommon in Bartels' GSMNP inventory. This species makes up 0.93% of terrestrial specimens collected in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Diet: Carnivorous or omnivorous.
Reproduction: Ornamented eggs deposited externally.
