Comments: Sawyers are large beetles with very long antennae. Monochamus titillator has a reddish integument that is largely overlain on the elytra with a mottled pattern consisting of whitish, yellowish, and blackish patches (Yanega, 1996; Lingafelter, 2007). This species is very similar to M. carolinensis but is generally grayer or more mottled looking due to the heavier covering of setae on the elytra. The structural features described below also help separate these two species but all of these differences are mainly in degree rather than qualitative. Photographs are often difficult to interpret and it often requires comparison to confirmed museum specimens to reliably tell them apart.
Total Length [body plus wings; excludes ovipositor]: 17-31 mm (Yanega, 1996)
Structural Features: The punctures on the elytra are smaller and more widely spaced than in M. carolinensis (Yanega, 1996) and the terminal sutural spines are more pronounced.
