Description: A dark species, with a blackish abdomen and a dirty brown to black rest of the body. There is an orange band around the sides of the abdomen, and an orange 'plate' visible through the wings at the base of the abdomen, below the thorax. The face is dirty brown to black and the antennal segments are pale. This species has both macropterous (long-winged) and brachypterous (short-winged) forms.
Distribution in North Carolina

Habitats: Has been found in grassy areas such as lawns
Plant Associates: Ischaemum muticum, Poa pratensis (Kentucky bluegrass), Puccinellia nuttalliana (Nuttall's alkaligrass), Aira caryophyllea var. caryophyllea (silver hairgrass) (UDEL)
Behavior: Can be attracted at night with a light.
