Description: A brownish leafhopper with a plump appearance and an abdomen that extends past the wings. Wing cells may be light to dark brown in color, and the face is dark brown. Females have a deeply excavated pregenital sternite, visible on the underside before the tip of the abdomen. The abdomen extends well past the end of the wings. Males have a sword-shaped pygofer processes, almost resembling a pair of blades, sticking out of the rear end of the abdomen (an abdomen that does not extend as far past the wings as in the female) (BG).

Abundance: This species has only been recorded from a few counties in the mountains, though probably more abundant in the right habitat in this region.

Habitats and Life History

Habitats: Found in the grassy understory of forests (BG), as well as bushy, vegetated montane meadows and roadsides.

Plant Associates: Various grasses

Behavior:

Comment: Most individuals of Extrusanus are typically flightless; females which are more often fully-winged are presumed to fly before laying eggs. In E. extrusanus, on average 3 out of 23 females are macropterous (long-winged), equating to 12% of the population. (Hamilton 1995)
