synonym Epiptera fusca
description A mostly uniform brown species, with dark brown wings that have paler, light-brown to orange outer margins; the wing tips also can have an orange hue. This species has a characteristic symmetrical pattern of black spots across the wings, with two to three small clustered dots on each wing tip, three spots in the middle outer margins of each wings, and several black spots further in the center of the wings. This species has a long, broad tapered head (helpful in distinguishing from other Cixidia species) and a characteristic, two-toned dark-brown to blackish face; the vertex is one and a half times as long as its basal width (UDEL). There is a noticeable whitish stripe on the side of the head, more discernable with a ventral view of the body.

For a couple pics of a pinned specimen, see here: UDEL.

distribution Eastern and central United States, as far west as Colorado; also eastern Canada and Puerto Rico (UDEL)
abundance Scattered records across the state, an uncommon species that is seemingly more common in the Coastal Plain; possibly more abundant in the right habitat.
