synonym Otiocerus degeeri
description A stunning species, ranging in color from red to pink to purple. The wing venation is reddish, and there are dark spots between the veins and also along the wing tips. The thorax is concolorous with the wings, and the abdomen and head are either red, pink, or purple (depending on the color form). The head itself is stunning, and depending on the individual, the facial features can be quite developed. The top outer edge of the head is white, giving the appearance of "eyebrows", and the lower outer edge of the head is a row of alternating black and white marks. Sometimes the appendages on the face can give the appearance of a mouth (especially a boldly marked individual like above). The legs are whitish, with reddish bases.
distribution Transcontinental, found across both the United States, except California (which has the endemic A. californicum), and Canada; also Cuba (UDEL)
abundance Recorded across the state, an uncommon species; probably more abundant in the right habitat.
