synonym
description A variable species, ranging from yellowish to yellowish-green with yellowish subhyaline forewings. The crown is roundedly produced, with the median length slightly longer in the middle than next to the eyes. The male subgenital plates are broad at the base and narrowed at the apex, being almost as long as the pygofer. The female pregenital sternite has the posterior margin rounded with a very deep, parallel-sided excavation in the middle which almost reaches the anterior margin (though see additional remark in comments section below). Adult males are 6.3-7.0 mm long, while females are 6.5-7.5 mm. (Cwikla, 1988)
distribution Southeastern United States (SC, NC, VA), where it is rare to infrequently encountered, primarily in coastal areas (Cwikla 1988)
abundance Uncommon with scattered records across the state, primarily from the Coastal Plain and eastern Piedmont; likely under collected and therefore under reported, probably occurs throughout the eastern part of the state at the very least.

habitat Grassy areas, forest edge; has been found in Arundinaria and herbaceous undergrowth in the state

behavior Can be attracted at night with a light.
comments Based on some CO1 DNA sequencing that has recently been done, female specimens with sternite that match Cwikla's drawing genetically match C. galbanatus, while females shown below have sequences that match C. aurum. It is therefore possible that females previously identified as aurum are actually variants of galbanatus, and these are the true aurum. However, per C. Dietrich, CO1 barcodes are not completely infallible and this may not necessarily indicate that previous authors have mistakenly associated different females with C. aurum. More study is clearly needed.

NOTE: Chlorotettix is a notoriously difficult genus to identify to species visually; a majority of the species are various shade of yellow and green, and many can only be reliably distinguished by looking at genital features and/or by dissection. Therefore, it is very important for all Chlorotettix species (other than several like necopinus and tergatus) to obtain a picture of the underside.
