| description |
A greenish member of the genus, this species has somewhat densely reticulate (meshlike) wing venation and noticeable longitudinal veins; the clavus (inner region of the wing) is also reticulated. Individuals can display quite distinctive, bold longitudinal pronotal bands while others have fainter pronotal markings, resulting in a more uniformly colored pronotum. The female pregenital sternite has the posterior margin concavely rounded. The size range for males is 8.5-9.5 mm in length; females are typically 9.5-10.5 mm, sometimes a little longer (female Gyponanas tend to be 1.0 mm longer than males, though some are even longer). Females, because of their size, can appear slender. (Hamilton 1982, DeLong 1942) |

| comments |
This species is similar to G. vasta (densely reticulated individuals) and G. praelonga, but is smaller and has different male genitalia (Hamilton 1982). It also seemingly is very similar to offula, falling within the same size range and showing a similar wing venation pattern. As is the case with most species of Gyponana, a male specimen is probably needed to confirm a species' identity.
NOTE: Gyponana can be a challenging genus to identify, with many species looking similar to one another and not being able to be identified to species unless [a male is] dissected. Further complicating this situation is that the genus in general is likely overdescribed, with numerous species likely synonymous and needing to be lumped. It is important to take clear photos showing the wing venation, and get measurements and underside photos for size and sex. |
