A distinctive species, with long, flattened antennae. The prothorax is often speckled brown and can be darker laterally. The mesothorax is bicolored, being pale medially and darker laterally. Copicerus is the only New World genus in the family with long, flattened antennae and a spine-like calcar (UDEL).
This species "has been historically called Copicerus irroratus Swartz, 1802, but the holotype of that species is from Cuba and is not the same entity as the species present in the eastern U.S." A future publication will likely resolve the taxonomic issue here and lead to a new species and name change for the taxon that is in the eastern U.S. (BG) |
