DistributionSeveral collections were made by Steve Leonard and Julie Hackney in 1970, and again by Leonard in 1979, at Wilmington, New Hanover County. Specimens were originally determined as B. caribaea or B. diffusa, and annotated later by W. Mahler and R. Spellenberg.

Native of the pantropics and northward to the U.S. Southwest. FNA suggests it is adventive on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, north to VA.
AbundanceVery rare. The original population was very large and many herbarium sheets were put up.
HabitatRailroad yard near station, waste area near railroad tracks.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting June-September.
IdentificationRed Spiderling has stipitate-glandular fruits (vs. glabrous in B. erecta). The leaf blades are narrowly elliptical and pointed vs. rather rounded and blunt in B. diffusa. The flowers are in a tight ball that is magenta-rose-red in color, at the ends of stalks.
