Distribution | Only one collection qualifies to be mapped: Orange County, Morgan Creek floodplain below Hunt's garden, 10 January 1991, Julia Larke 1866 (NCU). Specimens from Dare, Davidson, Forsyth, Gaston, Jackson, and Swain counties are all from cultivated or persisting plants.

Identification | Japanese Flowering-quince grows to 3 feet tall, the recent branches red-purple. Leaves are obovate or spatulate, 1.5-2 inches long, the margins crenate-serrate. There is a kidney-shaped stipule at the axil of some leaves. The flowers are 1-1.5 inches diameter, dark red. C. speciosa has serrate leaf margins and smooth branches (vs. scabrous branches in this species). | |
