Native of India; in N.A. NH to Ont., south to FL and TX; also Southwest.

HabitatRoadsides, dump, island in sound (at Beaufort, Carteret Co.), river floodplain at bridge, dump, waste ground.
PhenologyFlowering July-August; fruiting August-October.
IdentificationCanteloupe is a trailing vine with well-spaced broad leaves and a tendril opposite each leaf. Most parts are hispid/hairy. Leaves are roundish or kidney shaped in outline, irregularly and shallowly lobed, margins entire or weakly toothed. Flowers are axillary, yellow, the petals up to 10 mm (or so) long.
Taxonomic CommentsWeakley (2018) splits out 2 varieties, but we lump them for convenience.
