DistributionVerified specimens have been seen from Brunswick, Moore, New Hanover, and Randolph counties. Other specimens so named turn out to be E. cyathophora.

Native of Mexico to South America; in N.A. -- NC to FL, TX, and CA.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatWaste areas, disturbed ground.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting throughout most of the year.
IdentificationThis species is much like E. cyathophora, but bases of the inflorescence leaf-like bracts lack a red or pink blaze; at most they have a pale greenish area.
Taxonomic CommentsFor decades the name heterophylla was misapplied to the plant that is cyathophora.
