DistributionNorthern Mountains; disjunct to Wake County (field in south Raleigh, in 1947). A Hoke County collection is actually H. pusillum.

Native to the western and northern U.S. and Canada; adventive or planted southeastward.
AbundanceVery rare. The montane populations were found in 2007 and 2010.
HabitatRoad median, gravel parking lot, field.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting May-August.
IdentificationFoxtail Barley is a beautiful grass, due to the large, leaning or arching inflorescence and very long awns, which shimmer a golden-straw color in the breeze. Many plants are tinged a pale rosy color to boot. Plants typically grow 1-2 feet tall.
