DistributionThroughout the state, but less frequent in the Mountains.

Southeastern NY to MN, south to FL, TX, and AZ.
AbundanceFrequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain, Sandhills, and most of the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains and foothills.
HabitatMesic to moist roadsides, powerlines, fields, pastures. The true native habitats in NC are unknown, but perhaps prairie-like areas and glades. It shuns fire-maintained pinelands.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting April-June.
IdentificationIts short stature (at most about 1.5 feet), short inflorescence (up to just 9 cm long), and short awns make this unlike the alien barleys found in NC, with their large inflorescences and conspicuous, long awns.
