Distribution | Throughout the state, but less frequent in the Mountains.
Southeastern NY to MN, south to FL, TX, and AZ. | |
Abundance | Frequent to locally common in the Coastal Plain, Sandhills, and most of the Piedmont; infrequent in the mountains and foothills. | |
Habitat | Mesic to moist roadsides, powerlines, fields, pastures. The true native habitats in NC are unknown, but perhaps prairie-like areas and glades. It shuns fire-maintained pinelands. | |
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting April-June. | |
Identification | Its short stature (at most about 1.5 feet), short inflorescence (up to just 9 cm long), and short awns make this unlike the alien barleys found in NC, with their large inflorescences and conspicuous, long awns. | |
