DistributionCollections were made in 1970 near the "old railroad station" in Wilmington, New Hanover County. In Cabarrus County it was "adventive" at the edge of a yard and woods in 2009. A specimen from Wake County was from cultivated plants.

Native of Mexico north to AR, LA, and TX. Planted elsewhere and sometimes escaped.

PhenologyFlowering in August-September.
IdentificationTurk's-cap Mallow is a shrub with ovate to rotund, alternate leaves. Leaves may be slightly 3-lobed or 3-pointed. Flowers are red and very distinctive in not opening broadly, but remaining tubular in shape with the style extending beyond.
