DistributionAcross the state, but rare in the Sandhills and middle Coastal Plain.

Native of Europe; in N.A. nearly throughout.
AbundanceCommon in the Mountains and outer Coastal Plain, fairly common in the Piedmont; rare to uncommon elsewhere.
HabitatRoadsides, railroads, fields, fallow cropfields, waste places, vacant lots.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting March-December.
IdentificationBlack Medick is a multi-stem, sprawling to semi-erect herb. The leaves are well-spaced and divided into 3 obovate, clover-like leaflets. The flowers grow in a dense cluster at end of a long stalk, yellow and very small. The pod is rather kidney-shaped, with obvious veins, spineless. The species can be easily confused with several exotic clover (Trifolium) species.
