DistributionSo far documented from Robeson County only: soybean field, 1.7 miles NW of Rowland, 5 Nov. 1984 (D.T. Patterson s.n. (DUKE). Other collections from the same site later in the same month.

Native of southeastern Asia; in N.A. mostly in the Gulf Coast states; scattered elsewhere.
AbundanceVery rare, so far as is known. Other populations may not have been documented with herbarium specimens.
HabitatSoybean and other crop fields. This is a Federal noxious weed, and Soil Conservation Service agents monitor it.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting August-November.
IdentificationItch-grass may grow 2-5 or more feet tall and so stands above crops. The stems produce distinctive prop-roots from the lower nodes. The inflorescences are axillary and terminal, and look like narrow stacks of little cylinders one atop another.
