DistributionMountains, northern Piedmont, and northern Coastal Plain; absent from the Sandhills; only known from Robeson Co. in the southern Coastal Plain.

Native of Eurasia and northern Africa; in N.A. essentially throughout.
AbundanceFrequent to common in the Mountains, fairly common in the Piedmont, rare to uncommon in the northern Coastal Plain.
HabitatFields, cropfields, pastures, barnyards, disturbed soil, railroad margins, roadsides.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting May-November.
IdentificationThe species is similar to S. altissima vegetatively, but the pods are erect and held against the branches. This makes for a strange-looking, rather "naked branched" plant. Also the pedicels are much shorter than those of S. altissima.
