| Distribution | Scattered across the state, with gaps. A collection (many herbaria) from Pitt County was actually in Edgecombe County.
Native of the Andes of South America; in N.A. throughout much of Canada and the U.S., with a big gap in the Rockies-Midwest. | |
| Abundance | No doubt rare on the landscape, but can be difficult to tell at many sites if an individual was planted or an escape. | |
| Habitat | Waste ground, dumps, recycling facility, creek side in public park, along river, weed in flower bed. | |
| Phenology | Flowering and fruiting May-November. | |
| Identification | The Garden Tomato is our familiar food plant and thus needs no description. Flowers are yellow, and unlike Physalis and yellow-flowered Solanum, the corolla is much smaller and petals separate for 2/3 their length. Remember that the edible portion is the fruit of the plant -- thus the tomato is botanically considered a fruit, and not a vegetable. | |
