DistributionMostly in the outer Coastal Plain; also the Piedmont portion of Lee County.

Native of the Andes of South America; in N.A. scattered across most of Canada and the U.S., with big gap in Midwest Plains and Rockies.
AbundanceRare. The plant barely escapes from cultivation.
HabitatDumps, trash heaps, cropfield, waste place.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting June-August.
IdentificationThe Potato as a plant is hardly known to most people. The stems grow 1-2.5 feet tall, the leaves are pinnately compound, with about 7 ovate leaflets that have entire margins (not lobed or cut). The flowers are white to lavender, and typical-looking for a Solanum. The "potatoes" are underground thick tubers.
