DistributionScattered in the Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and northern Mountains. A specimen from Jackson County was cultivated.

Native of Africa; in N.A. scattered throughout the U.S. and southernmost Canada.
AbundanceUncommon. It probably does not escape far from where it has been cultivated.
HabitatFields, roadsides, lawn weed (under bird feeder), crop fields, etc.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting August-October.
IdentificationSorghum is a popular agricultural crop in NC. The plants grow less than 4 feet tall (reportedly 4 times that in FNA), with broad leaves and a thick, ellipsoid inflorescence. From a distance the yellowish or straw-colored spikelets can easily be seen.
