DistributionKnown only from the southern Coastal Plain. First collected 1957 in a field in Robeson County.

Native of the Western states -- NE and TX to CA and Mex.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatWaste areas, sandy field.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting May-October.
IdentificationGolden Crownbeard grows 2-4 feet tall, with lower leaves opposite and the upper ones alternate. The leaf undersides and stems are white pubescent. The leaves are triangular-ovate, with the margins evenly toothed. The heads have broad dark yellow disks and fairly short, yellow, 3-toothed rays. Though it is a relatively tall herb, our native Verbesina species are all much taller, typically in the 6-7-foot tall range.
