Distribution | Known outside of cultivation only in Jackson and Swain counties in the southern Mountains. First collected in 1946 "growing near Cullowhee" (Jackson County). Specimens from Alleghany, Macon, Orange, Randolph, and Wake counties are all from cultivated plants.

Habitat | Wooded slope above river, seedling in campus planting bed, near Lakeside Trail (Swain Co.). | |
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting April-May. | |
Identification | This viburnum can be identified by the combination of 3-lobed (maple-like) leaves, large and sterile outer flowers, and red fruits. | |
Taxonomic Comments | The native variety americanum occurs in Canada south to NJ, WV, OH, NE, WY.
