Distribution | A controversial taxon, treated as merely a form of H. virginianum or as a variety, or even a full species (Weakley 2020). Karlsson et al. (2017) discuss its merits and treat it as a variety. This taxon is limited to the Mountains, probably occurring in all counties.

Habitat | "Rich cove forests and other moist rocky forests, up to 5500 feet in elevation" (Weakley 2022). | |
Phenology | Flowers in May and June, and fruits in July and August. | |
Identification | The flowers are typically dark violet, in contrast to pink or whitish in H. virginianum. Its lower stem is smooth to only slightly pubescent; the latter has the lower stem slightly to densely pubescent. | |
