DistributionA controversial taxon, treated as merely a form of H. virginianum or as a variety, or even a full species (Weakley 2020). Karlsson et al. (2017) discuss its merits and treat it as a variety. This taxon is limited to the Mountains, probably occurring in all counties.

A southern Appalachian endemic -- "N. WV south through w. and sw. VA and e. KY to w. NC and e. TN" (Weakley 2022).
AbundanceUncommon to infrequent, but can be locally numerous.
Habitat"Rich cove forests and other moist rocky forests, up to 5500 feet in elevation" (Weakley 2022).
PhenologyFlowers in May and June, and fruits in July and August.
IdentificationThe flowers are typically dark violet, in contrast to pink or whitish in H. virginianum. Its lower stem is smooth to only slightly pubescent; the latter has the lower stem slightly to densely pubescent.
