DistributionSERNEC has no NC specimens. BONAP maps it in Mecklenburg County, and Weakley (2018) shows it for the NC Piedmont.

Native of Eurasia and north Africa; in N.A. southern Canada south to NC, northern MS, KS, UT, WA.

PhenologyFlowering and fruiting April-June.
IdentificationA tall shrub or small tree up to 25 feet. Leaves are opposite or subopposite, ovate to elliptic and usually with a short drip-tip, rather shiny above, tardily deciduous. The leaves of R. davurica are relatively longer and have 4-6 lateral veins on each side of the leaf midrib, versus 3 lateral veins in R. cathartica.
