DistributionWeakley (2018) says: "the single NC record seems questionable and unlikely". This is a rare species of the lower Coastal Plain in SC and southward, and thus Person County (as reported in RAB 1968), along the VA border in the NC Piedmont, seems way out of the normal range. The website editors thus consider this species as not occurring in NC. Two specimens from Mecklenburg County, as seen on the SERNEC database, probably refer to a green-flowered M. carolinensis.
AbundanceThe website editors agree with Weakley (2018) that the species is likely not found in NC and prefer to give a State Rank of SRF. The NCNHP removed it from its Watch List in 2022.
