Distribution | A single collection in 1993 from Carteret County: Cherry Point Marine Corps Outlying Field, in borrow pond, LeBlond 3544 (NCU). A second population was found by Larry Chen of Duke University in Craven County Weakley (2018) suggests that records from the Atlantic Seaboard are non-native, as do the website editors.
Native west of the Appalachians, from OH to Ont. and NE south to northwestern GA and TX. Also NY to FL.
Abundance | Very rare, so far as is known. Considered as a Watch List species by NCNHP and given a State Rank of SU (Undetermined), even though highly likely to be non-native. Thus, the editors suggest a State Rank of SE (Exotic) and no Watch List status.
Habitat | Intermittently inundated borrow pond with mostly native vegetation (Carteret Co.); "by a sushi/ramen place in Havelock" (Craven Co., 2025).
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting May-October.
Identification | Narrowleaf Paleseed is an annual, branched herb only about 6 inches long/tall (potentially to a foot). The leaves are dissected into narrow segments. The flowers are lavender-blue to white, with a yellowish throat.
