DistributionA curious distribution along the northern border of the state; south on the Outer Banks to Bogue Banks (Carteret County). First collected in 1934 from north of Winston-Salem in Forsyth County.

Native of the U.S. and southern Canada from the western Great Lakes states and the Mississippi River, westward. Adventive eastward.

HabitatRoadsides, railroad yard, parking lot, near cemetery, opening in maritime forest.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting late August-November.
IdentificationWhite Sagebrush is well-named, as its stems and leaf undersides are white to very pale gray-green. The leaves vary from broadly linear and unlobed to broader and deeply pinnatifid. The upper surfaces of the leaves are gray or gray-green.
