DistributionSouthern Coastal Plain, ranging north to Sampson and Jones counties. Does not range west to the Sandhills region.

Coastal Plain, NC to northern FL and southeastern LA.
AbundanceUncommon over its NC range as a whole, but locally common at some well-managed savannas.
HabitatMoist to dry Longleaf Pine--Wiregrass savannas and flatwoods, and powerline clearings through the same.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting late July-October.
IdentificationThis striking species has stems that typically grow 1.5-2.5 feet tall, with a single terminal head (or rarely up to 4) that has yellow rays and disks. It is similar to a few species of Helenium, but those bloom in spring only. Very similar to Purple Honeycomb-head (B. atropurpurea), but that species has red-purple disks and inhabits wetter sites.
