DistributionKnown from 3 counties in the Piedmont, plus Tryon in Polk County. In 2020 found at the edge of a cemetery on the upper floodplain terrace of the Cape Fear River, Cumberland County. First collected in NC in Polk County in 1921. Other records from Durham, Mecklenburg, Iredell, Orange, and Wake counties are from cultivated plants.

Native of China; in N.A. -- D.C. to AR, south to FL and TX.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatEdge of woods, disturbed woods, roadside.
PhenologyFlowering May-August.
IdentificationChinese Parasol-tree may grow to be a tree 60 feet tall. Young bark is green with pale streaks, later becoming gray. The leaves are broader than long (or about the same), shallowly cut into 3 lobes (or with 2 more small lobes), and may exceed 2 feet long and wide. The flowers occur on large open panicles; sepals 5, petals apparently absent. The fruits are lance-shaped or narrowly ovate.
