Distribution | Scattered in the Outer Coastal Plain and southern low Mountains; reports and specimens from the intervening area have proven to be other species. Nonetheless, the species is certainly absent or nearly so in the Piedmont and inner Coastal Plain. Specimens at herbarium ODU from Gates and Hertford counties are at the SERNEC portal, but need to be identified in the flesh before accepting here. Specimens at NCU from Jones and Onslow counties were annotated in 2020 to B. trichosperma and B. polylepis respectively. The specimen record in RAB (1968) for Beaufort County has not been located.
NJ to MO, south to FL and TX, mostly on the Coastal Plain and Mississippi Embayment. However, VA and MD lack records.
Abundance | Rare to locally uncommon in tidal regions, though can be numerous where found. Very rare to rare in the southern Mountains. This is a Watch List species.
Habitat | Openings in swamp forests, margins of impoundments, and fresh-tidal marshes. In the Mountains it occurs in bogs.
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting July-October.
Identification | This species grows 1-3 feet tall, with 3-parted leaves that are cleft into narrow segments. The heads are showy with ray florets up to an inch long. Smallfruit Beggarticks can look similar to narrow-leaved individuals of Bearded Beggarticks (B. aristosa), but differs in its smaller seeds (2.5-5 mm vs. 5-8). Bidens trichosperma has a very similar gestalt but often with narrower leaf segments; its seeds are about 7 mm long not including awns (vs. about 5).
