DistributionNot native in NC; escaped in the Southern Coastal Plain and Sandhills. The Carteret County specimen is from Cape Lookout.

Native of the Coastal Plain from SC to FL and LA; planted north to NC. The records on the map are from believed to be of individuals away from such plantings.
AbundanceFormerly uncommon to frequent on Fort Liberty, but stands have been eliminated in recent years and replaced with native Longleaf Pine. Uncommon elsewhere.
HabitatDry to mesic sandhills, pinelands, interdune marsh.
Phenology
IdentificationSlash Pine recalls Longleaf Pine (P. palustris), but the needles are definitely shorter and cones are on short but distinct pedicels (vs. sessile). Most NC plants do not produce cones.
