DistributionSouthern Coastal Plain and Sandhills. The Carteret County specimen is from Cape Lookout.

Native of the Coastal Plain from SC to FL and LA; planted north to NC.
AbundanceFormerly uncommon to frequent on Fort Bragg, but stands have been eliminated in recent years. Uncommon elsewhere.
HabitatDry to mesic sandhills, pinelands, interdune marsh.
Phenology
IdentificationSlash Pine recalls Longleaf Pine, but needles are definitely shorter and cones are on short but distinct pedicels (vs. sessile). Most NC plants do not produce cones.
