DistributionCollected only from Yancey County, in 1971, saplings escaped from cultivated plants. A collection from Haywood County was of planted trees.

Native of southeastern Canada and northeastern U.S., south (rarely) to VA and IL.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatMontane ridges, where planted and locally escaped.
Phenology
IdentificationRed Pine has 2 needles per fascicle and 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) long. It differs mainly from Slash Pine (P. elliottii) and Loblolly Pine (P. taeda) by its unarmed cones, that is, without a hard sharp prickle on each cone scale.
