DistributionDistributed mostly in the Piedmont and low elevations in the Mountains; rare in the northeastern Coastal Plain and disjunct to Onslow County in the southeastern Coastal Plain.

PA to KS south to northwestern FL and TX.
AbundanceUncommon in the Mountains fairly common in the Piedmont; rare in the Coastal Plain.
HabitatRocky slopes, ledges, edges of granitic flatrocks, etc. Less often in sandy soils.
Phenology
IdentificationVariety erecta in the field stands out via its bolt-upright stem, vs. ascending or trailing in var. angustifolia. See Weakley for other ID criteria.
