DistributionMountains only. First collected in 1936 in Haywood County and in 1938 in Buncombe County.

Native of Eurasia; in N.A. southern Canada south to NC, KS, CO, and CA.
AbundanceUncommon to locally fairly common.
HabitatRoadsides, pastures, meadows, cropfields, rocky woodland by creek, campus weed.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting June-October.
IdentificationPlumeless-thistles differ from Cirsium species in having winged stems and the pappus is not plumose. This species differs from C. nutans in its erect heads (vs. nodding and larger in C. nutans).
