| Distribution | Sandhills and southern Coastal Plain, ranging north to Moore, Johnston, and Onslow counties.
NC to southwestern FL and eastern TX. | |
| Abundance | Infrequent to frequent throughout. Much more numerous than the similar A. rufa, which occurs over much of the same range, but inhabits wet soil. | |
| Habitat | Mesic to dry flats and bean dips (swales dominated by legume species), usually in loamy sand soils. | |
| Phenology | Late June-October. | |
| Identification | The narrow inflorescences with densely hairy floral scales readily identify our two species of silkyscale. The hairs are translucent and stick out vertically from the scale surfaces. The plants stand erect, 2.5-4 feet tall. In this species, the scales and hairs are green in color (vs. red-purple in A. rufa) and it inhabits mesic to dry soil. In addition, in this species the leaves spread out sideways on or near the ground (vs. essentially erect in A. rufa). | |
