AuthorGrisebach
DistributionMountains only, generally at the higher elevations; apparently scarce in the northern counties (along the VA border).

Circumboreal, in N.A. south to NC, TN, IL, NM, and CA.
AbundanceRare, though with enough records scattered over the Mountains -- at least in 10 counties -- that it is on the NCNHP's Watch List and not the rare list. The website editors suggest a State Rank of S2; at the NCNHP's rank of S1S2, it should thus be listed as Significantly Rare.
HabitatNorthern hardwood forests, spruce-fir forests, at high elevations. Also at the bases of wet cliffs at high elevations.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting June-August.
IdentificationThe stems grow 2-3 feet tall, with a terminal inflorescence 3 inches to 1 foot long and composed of a series of well-spaced, gray-green or whitish, whorls. C. arundinacea occurs mostly east of the Mountains, or at lower elevations in the Mountains. It differs by a less open inflorescence with more whorls, and that species has larger spikelets (usually 4.5-6 mm long vs. 2.5-4 mm long in C. latifolia).
