DistributionThroughout the state, except for middle to high elevations in the Mountains.

MA to WI, south to FL and TX.
AbundanceCommon to locally abundant in the Coastal Plain and Piedmont; fairly common in low Mountains, but rare in middle and high elevations.
HabitatDry to mesic or xeric woodlands and glades of various sorts, but not where very shady. Prefers disturbances, openings, rocky slopes and outcrops, clearings, fields, roadsides, and powerlines.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting late July-October.
IdentificationThis Eupatorium is readily identified by its whorls of 3-4 linear leaves, plus fascicles of smaller leaves in the leaf axils. Individual heads are narrower than all (?) of our other species in the genus. The species most similar is Torrey's Thoroughwort (E. torreyanum), which has leaves 5-10 mm wide (vs. 1-5 mm wide) and leaves paired or in whorls of 3.
Taxonomic CommentsNote that E. torreyanum has been pulled out of this species, and thus E. hyssopifolium of older references incorporated two species.
